Ragan unConference wiki is up

I’ve just finished creating a wiki for an upcoming unConference. It took all of about 10 minutes. The page that matters is the topic suggestion page, which (as on most unConference, barcamp, casecamp and podcamp wikis) will dictate the agenda as well as the people to lead the sessions.

More than 100 people are already registered for the unConference, which is different from most that have preceded it. In this case, rather than being a self-organizing event, Ragan Communications is behind the session, which takes place the day before the start of the two-day “Corporate Communications and the Social Media Revolution” conference on the 27th and 28th. (Disclosure: Ragan is one of my clients.) The unConference—which is entirely free—needs no sponsors to cover costs, since Ragan is picking those up. To be sure, the company hopes some of those who attend the unConference will stick around for the more traditional paid sessions, but they’re also embracing the social media on which the paid conference will focus. They hope to learn how to host free content (such as that at MyRagan.com in support of their business. Building a larger community of professionals certainly can’t hurt.

The full-day unConference will take place on September 26 at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel. I’m pleased to be chairing the event, but in the spirit of unConferences, it will be the participants who drive both the agenda and the conversation. If you’re interested, drop by the wiki to register and offer your thoughts on topics. This is a PBWiki, so a password is required to contribute to the page. Contact me or Michael Sebastien from Ragan to get the password.

  • 1.Shel,

I wrote a case study about best practices in "unconference" management last year (http://www.expoweb.com/2006JulyAug/2006JulyAugustBestPractices.htm) and thought the way the organizers set the agenda was very clever. After brief instructions, attendees went to eight blank agenda boards and wrote in topics for one-hour time slots. Sessions filled up within 10 minutes.

I also think you may need to give your corporate communicators some prompts and encouragement in using the wiki. Though PBWiki is pretty intuitive, I've found that communicators are still hesitant to dive in. (I created one for KC/IABC and it died a slow death from disuse. My bad.)

  • 2.Thanks, Cathy. A clarification: When you say attendees "went" to eight blank agenda boards, you mean in person and on-site, right? As opposed to using some kind of utility online in advance. Just checking...

  • 3.Yes, on site. But they had a wiki, too, and used it to solicit topics and speakers in advance. They also called movers and shakers directly and encouraged them to think about what they'd like to talk about at the unconference. So people were primed to show up and claim time and space for their topics.

  • 4.I'm glad to see that the un-conference wiki was so easy to set up!
