Independent podcasts start getting attention

I guess good things happen to people who appear on Bryan Person’s NewComm Road podcast.  A couple weeks ago, Bryan interviewed Mignon Fogarty, host of the Grammar Girl podcast (I’m a faithful listener). Now, Mignon is the subject of a CNN piece.

It’s good to see independent podcasts getting mainstream attention. You have to think some people who hadn’t heard a podcast before will give “Grammar Girl” a try based on the broad coverage this story gets, reaching way beyond the limits of the blogosphere and podosphere. The show has already been downloaded 1.3 million times, according to the article. And if people like one podcast, they’re bound to try another.

Is that the sound of scales tipping I hear?

  • 1.You may very well be right, Shel. Of course Mignon does a fabulous show, as does Bryan, for that matter.

From what I can see, the general public is clueing into podcasts, as are corporate types. Yesterday a colleague called me and said: "I received an iPod for Christmas and I listen twice a day when I walk my dog. It's great, but I'm getting tired of listening to music all the time. Please tell me how I can find podcasts."

Of course this tells me that we still have a lot of education to do!

  • 2.Thanks for the mention, Shel. It was certainly a pleasure to interview Mignon, and it's so nice to see her garnering plenty of well-deserved publicity. Also, Mignon's QDnow.com network has turned her other two shows into instant hits. I hope that 2007 brings many more success stories from the realm of independent podcasts.

  • 3.Thanks for the mention, Shel. It certainly was a pleasure interviewing Mignon, and it's so nice to see her earning this kind of publicity. The two other shows in her QDnow.com network -- Mr. Manners and the Money Girl -- have also become instant hits. Here's hoping that 2007 delivers many more success stories from the realm of independent podcasts.
