IE7 Beta 3: Screw you, bloggers

I had written just a fairly lengthy post in the text entry field in Expression Engine, the blogging platform I use, and wanted to add a link. I clicked the “link” button, which opens a pop-up window where you enter the URL. But I had forgotten that I was using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 (public beta 3). If I had listened hard enough, I probably could have heard Microsoft programmers chuckling from way up in Redmond.

For when I clicked that link, I got a notice telling me popups were blocked. I right-clicked the banner and instructed IE7 to “temporarily allow pop-ups” for this site, which it did—as soon as it redrew the page, wiping out everything I had written.

Way to go, Microsoft. I need to remember to load Firefox whenever I’m going to write a blog post. Let’s hope this little glitch has been addressed by the time IE7 is released out of beta, whenever that might be.

  • 2.First, welcome GIRLZ! I didn’t say it last week, but you’re all really smart and have already made an impact. At this rate, you’ll be signing autographs in a week or two.

More proof that everything is Bill's fault -- either Gates or Clinton, depending on the problem.

  • 4.Shel, we have seen some problems with blog authoring packages and we're working to try to make IE more compatible. We'll contact the pMachine folks about the problem you're seeing.

There are a few practical, short term options for you to use as well. In your case, you will want to make sure your site can bypass IE7's pop-up blocker. You can do that by selecting the pop-up blocking settings option from the clicking the tools button on IE7 and adding your site. That should allow pop-ups and prevent you from needing to refresh the page as you had to above.

Other blog management packages have problems because they include secure https content mixed with plain http content. IE7 blocks the plain content in that case by default but you can setup the security zones to display the plain http content by enabling "display mixed content" under custom settings on the Security Tab of the "Internet Options" dialog. Since this reduces security, you might want to only put this change on "trusted sites" zone and then add your blog to your trusted sites.

Please let us know if either of these help get your blog authoring working correctly with IE7.

  • 5.Internet explorer 6 was a bloated web browser. After installing beta 7 I have to give Microsoft some credit for trying. Right away I noticed how much quicker the browser is. Something familiar was the multi-tabbed browser feature which Firefox first took advantage of.

  • 6.Rob, I'm grateful and impressed you took the time to post here! Thanks. Unfortunately, none of these solutions worked. I couldn't add the blog to the trusted zone: IE7 insisted it could only be an https:// site that's added, and going that route does not work for the blog. Displaying mixed content across the board under security settings had no effect -- it still blocks pop-ups, and pop-ups are still blocked after setting my blog site to bypass pop-ups. So I'm precluded from using the link-addition feature in Expression Engine, meaning I have to code them by hand (which is fine, just more work).

I'm anxious to hear what comes out of your discussions with pMachine.

  • 7.i updated to IE7 yesterday and had *exactly* the same problem when i was making a forum post about... IE7 problems. i clicked to enter a link; was told that the pop-up was disallowed; right-clicked to allow it; bye-bye, forum post!

it also appears that any link that uses 'target="_blank"' is also treated as a pop-up and, likewise, blocked. my blog posts *live* on target="_blank", and IE7's overzealous security measures are killing me!
