Another blogger fired

Ellen Simonetti can add another hash mark to her count of bloggers who have lost their jobs over their writing. The Register in the UK reports that Joe Gordon, an 11-year employee of bookseller Waterstone’s, lost his job over posts in his blog, Woolamaloo Gazette.

Gordon hasn’t limited his reaction to his blog (where he said, “How can anyone be expected to go through their personal life in fear of saying the wrong thing? No-one should.”) Author Richard Morgan has jumped to Gordon’s defense. In a letter to Waterstone’s, Morgan wrote: “

“You sell books which offer serious critique of the corporate environment and government, but do not expect to suffer punitive action from government or corporate quarters as a result. You sell books which criticise and satirise religious and political groups, but you do not expect to be firebombed by extremists as a result. Surely Joe has the right to let off steam in his free time without having to fear for his livelihood as a result.”

No comment from Waterstone’s.
