Online calendar could be big

From Scoble’s blog I followed a link to Thomas Hawk’s Digital Connection and an entry about 30 Boxes, which enters public beta on Sunday. Om Malik has apprently claimed that 30 Boxes will do for web-based calendaring what Gmail did for web-based email. After seeing it, Hawk agreed: “Sure, as you’d expect you get all the ajaxy eye candy type stuff, but it was the built in social networking functionality that blew me away.” Hawk’s post includes a detailed description and screen shots. I’ll definitely be there Sunday to sign up when the beta goes live.

  • 1.This looks really cool. Can't wait to check it out in a couple of days.

    Hard to imagine that one year ago "social media" was only a vague concept to me. Same with RSS. I hadn't heard of Flickr or podcasting.

    I'm sure I'm not alone in writing this, but the last year has been utterly fascinating and thoroughly educational in learning about and experiencing the gamut of existing and emerging new media tools. I can only begin to wonder what the next 365 days will hold.

  • 2.A friend of mine built such a system in the '90s. This was during the dot com era, so it is interesting to see the idea come full circle. I look forward to seeing how it does. The new capabilities should really make it more feature rich than the one my friend built, but even then, it was pretty cool. I guess the time just hadn't come. Still, I would find it very hard to give up Outlook, even with its many faults.

  • 3.Oh, I wouldn't give up Outlook, Kami. But you can't imagine how hard it is for my family to coordinate calendars. We don't run Exchange on the home network, so building a family calendar on 30 Boxes will be a terrific solution. It isn't hard to see organizations (clubs, non-profits, even work teams) use the system for the same purpose.

  • 4.Good point, in fact I already have a use in mind for that. I am building a Website for a non-profit and a calendaring module that a non-techie could fill out would be ideal. I will bookmark it in delicious.

    As for the family, we have been using a wall calendar. How ancient is that?
