Second Life business mag to launch

While skepticism continues to be aimed at Second Life as a channel communicators should take seriously, one company thinks it’s a serious enough business venue that it’s launching a magazine dedicated to business in Second Life.

C.C. Chapman alerted me to the impending publication of “SL Business: The Premium Virtual Branding Magazine.” The magazine, which will be published as a PDF, currently offers a media kit on its site, which opens with this question: “Have you been looking for centralized, up-to-date Second Life business info and spent forever asking complete strangers ‘How to’ and ‘Where can I’ type questions?”

Eleven content categories are planned, ranging from news and success stories to legal issues and investing information. The publication is also planning contests. In addition to the monthly magazine, the publishers are also planning weekly updates. Advertising rates top out at

US $2,950 in Linden dollars for a full-page ad—about $10 US—suggesting some confidence that the magazine will reach a wide readership

.

I couldn’t find much information on the publisher, Dalian Hansen, other than to note that he (I think it’s a “he”) is a very active SL participant. The first issue is due August 1. For those reluctant to commit the time required to figure out Second Life through active participation, this magazine and the Second Life Podcast may be enough to stay up to speed.

  • 1.You need to do some SERIOUS fact checking, Shel.

The advertising rates given for the SL Business magazine are in LINDEN dollars, NOT US dollars. (see http://www.slexchange.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=104411)

That full page ad for L$2950 translates to about US$10.

You might wish to check out the publication I work for, the Metaverse Messenger (http://www.metaversemessenger.com), the largest circulation newspaper in Second Life.

We are coming up on one year of weekly publication, and cover all aspects of SL.

  • 2.Very interesting post Shel. I have just picked up your book "Public Relations on the Net,", and it makes great reading... Even in India, there is increasing awareness about the mind-blowing changes that public relations is undergoing because of Internet and blogs.

  • 3.Sorry, Phoenix, you're most certainly right! It would be helpful if Linden dollars didn't use the traditional dollar sign ($), I suppose.

  • 4.Shel,
Thanks for the vote of confidence for slpocast.com. My hope is that it will indeed be what you need to stay caught up with what is going on in Second Life.

    Thanks again.

  • 6.Okay. I believed Shel and Neville when they said podcasting was the next thing. They were right. So when Shelville say that Getta Second Life is something more than just a curiosity, I have to have faith in their track record so far. So I have cancelled my 'free, trial and error, let's see what this is all about' avatar account and am about to launch a more concerted effort to get to understand t...
