“Stop Blocking” covered on “The Rundown”

Shel HoltzI completely forgot to blog this—I meant to—but Luke Armour interviewed me on his BlogTalkRadio show, “The Rundown,” earlier this month. The subject was Stop Blocking, the wannabe grassroots campaign I started out of frustration over the kneejerk company action of blocking employee access to online content.

In case you haven’t heard a BlogTalk Radio show before, it’s essentially a radio call-in-like experience, with audiences listening live online and calling in through a phone line. The entire session is recorded and made available as a download and as a podcast (through subscription to the series). There were a few call-ins that spiced up the session, and Luke‘s a solid interviewer.

I was also impressed with BTR’s functionality. It would be a kick for Neville and me to record an occasional episode of FIR this way, much as we’ve done with our two SkypeCast efforts (which produced quesitonable results).

  • 1.There's a lot to like about BTR -- especially allowing (at least in theory) people who might not use Skype to participate on a call-in basis. My biggest beef is the poor quality. Audio quality is a hallmark of FIR (and something I strive for in all my multimedia efforts as well). If the host were able to be mic'ed and only callers have phone line quality, BTR would have much more appeal to me.

  • 2.You were AT the Kirk Gibson game!!! I knew there was a reason I liked you! lol
I watched it on tv, & I cried I was so thrilled (& I'm not a Dodger fan).

  • 3.Chip - It's not the same thing, but I could produce a podcast using BTR that has high-quality audio on my end. I'm thinking of doing this for an FIR episode (theme/date/time to be determined). I'd use BTR but record on my end, as well. I'd Skype Neville in, then SkypeOut to BTR. Neville and I would be crystal clear, callers would sound like they're on the phone. BTR version would all sound like the phone, but we'd post the higher-quality version to the FIR site.

Clarence - I bleed Dodger blue. The Gibson home run live and in person is a life moment. I have an aunt and uncle who were at the game...but they left early!

  • 4.Yes, I can see that setup working, Shel. Might have to consider trying that myself.

  • 5.Shel,
I was happy to have you. Thanks for the kind words about me and BTR. I thought it was a great show, and you took "the rundown" segment in stride...hahaha.
Chip, of course, you could always SkypeOut. I believe that it's not the phone line that gives the audio quality you don't like, it's the microphones on most phones. We do interviews with nice headsets over landlines and they sound great. So, two options: SkypeOut or landline with a better mic.
