Is MOMA podcasting?

Steve Rubel posted an item last week applauding the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) for podcasting. I visited the site and couldn’t find an RSS feed, so I left Steve a comment asserting that it’s not a podcast; it’s just downloadable audio. Steve replied, “Shel, not so. I can subscribe via iTunes.”

So I went back to the MOMA site and scoured it for any reference to the iTunes listing. There’s nothing there. So, here’s what you’ve got with MOMA. If you happen to look through the iTunes directory, you can find the MOMA audio files, but if you visit the MOMA site (which never uses the word “podcast” itself), you can’t. And if you’re one of the many, many people who don’t use iTunes but continue to use some other podcatcher, like iPodder, you’re also hosed. And there is still no RSS feed on the site. So I stand by my guns: It’s not really a podcast.

  • 1.I guess by that logic....since your podcast is listed on iTunes you could say:

"Shel Holtz and Neville Hobson are in partnership with Apple to provide 'For Immediate Release' to Apple's 100 million iPod owners."

    That sounds impressive doesn't it.

  • 2.Shel, there was a story today on On The Media (http://www.onthemedia.org) about alternative podcasts for MOMA, created by a project at Marymount Manhattan College called ArtMobs. These are real (but fun) art commentary podcasts (with RSS). MOMA also weighed in about their own audio, which they now offer on their website (no RSS) and at iTunes after ArtMobs came to their attention. ArtMobs is at http://mod.blogs.com/art_mobs/, and the On The Media audio report is at http://www.onthemedia.org. A text transcript of the story will be available Tuesday, according to their website.
