In a comment to a recent episode of For Immediate Release, Rob Safuto from Awakaned Voice wondered if we might contribute a PR branch to Dave Winer’s new directory of podcast OPML files. So I created one made up of podcasts I listen to. (You can see it in a human-readable format on my links page.)

The idea is simple and highlights the huge potential for OPML. I created the file and host it on my own server, but for most people, it’s just a matter of exporting your podcatcher subscription list as an OPML file. I notified Dave that it was available by entering the URL in a Yahoo! Groups message. Dave nested the link in the “New Branches” section; one of these days, as the directory grows, it’ll probably find itself into a “Business” branch. It’s a community method of building out a directory in which each individual manages his own piece. (The potential internally is equally compelling. Imagine employees managing lists of links based on their knowledge to create a company-wide knowledge directory.) The podcast listing is brand-spanking-new, so there’s not too much there yet, but it could serve as a companion to the OPML directory that Adam Curry has been maintaining at Indiepodder.org.
