The importance of social platforms tend to emerge during natural disasters. The tsunami in Indonesia, Hurricane Katrina, and the Haiti quake all were accompanied by a surge in the use of various social media that demonstrated they were good for more than marketing campaigns and idle chat. YouTube, Twitter and Facebook all earned props for the important roles they played.

In a tweet earlier today, Southeastern University PR professor Barbara Nixon pointed out that more than 50,000 images turned up on Instagram bearing the hashtag #chickfila. By the time I looked a few hours later, that number had surged to more than 62,500. (I grabbed the image at left a short time before I last checked.)
