Did I mention I’m on vacation?

They have everything here on the Kona Coast of the big island of Hawaii. Tropical vistas, warm beaches, snorkeling, swimming, dining…

However, there is a dearth of high-speed Internet access. The resort where we’re staying has none in the rooms and they charge $.25 per minute to use the WiFi in the lobby. It’s a 25-mile drive to Borders, the closest location with a T*Mobile hotspot (no, the Starbucks locations around here don’t offer it). Right now, I’m online using my cell phone’s Bluetooth capability, which turns it into a modem. But it’s slow, about the same as 24kbps dial-up.

So I’m just not posting anything other than FIR show notes until I get back on the 12th.

Aloha!

  • 1.I'm somewhat surprised at the lack of technology you are encountering. I remember when we spoke at the 1995 HINTS-7 conference (Hawaii Information Network Technology Symposium) and heard how much investment the state was making in tech since it was separated from the mainland.

Then again, perhaps the rationale of resort management is that your are supposed to be on vacation and they don't want any work-oriented temptations to mar your get-a-way, (hint, hint).

Have a great time. Give my regards to Michele.

  • 2.To start things off, I will score two cheap trackbacks, one from Jason who is bound for Asia and one from Shel who is already in Hawaii. The reason being of course that on Monday I'll fly to Tel Aviv

  • 3.Then you'll have to have a "real" vacation. Turn off that cellphone too, and stop calling me with questions :)

Seriously though, reminds me of my Russian trip. The only high speed access was in Moscow at the Grand Marriot for approx US$40 per day, but that's only 2.8 cents a minutes.

Slow speed available everywhere, mainly on spyware infested boxes (connect your laptop to the phonelines - naaaah, didn't seem to work).

Had I been "travelling," as opposed to business or vacation, I'm sure better/cheaper arrangements were findable.

  • 4.I spent a week in Poipu on the island of Kauai in June and I'm headed back for the Thanksgiving week. The only T-1 I could find in Poipu was at this cute little coffee shop sitting out on the patio. I was right in the middle of the only demo I did all that week and it started pouring rain...it was pretty hilarious.

I agree with Ted. Unplug and fuggedaboudit...

  • 5.I'm hearing you. Best thing to do is to see if there are any local 'internet' cafe's in some big city. But on the other hand, you're on holidays, relaxing, no computers, enjoy it ;-).

  • 6.Hey namesake: Aloha. You know, sometimes off is not so bad. Let it go. Get offline and relax. When you come back i a few days, your blogs will have improved, although they're pretty damn good now.
