An unfortunate anniversary

It’s not the kind of anniversary you want to celebrate, but it has been 30 days since a new post has appeared on IABC’s Chairman’s Blog. The blog, which IABC launched on October 7, has three posts total, including the most recent October 24 entry.

To be fair, IABC’s chairman is a volunteer gig. The 2004-2005 chairman, David Kistle, has a day job. He’s also expected to fulfill a variety of obligations for the association other than blogging. But even Richard Edelman of Edelman Public Relations manages to contribute a weekly post to his blog.

Have unforeseen circumstances derailed a good-faith intent to keep the blog updated or do Kistle and IABC see this as more of an online chairman’s column than a blog? Either way, the blog has become something of an embarrassment. Between the infrequent posts and the lack of replies to comments, it appears that the communications association has launched a communication vehicle it doesn’t really understand.

I’ve subscribed to the RSS feed for the blog, but still check the page every day or two in the hopes that the feed is broken and something new has been published. I wince every time I see the October 24 posting date.  I lauded Kistle and IABC for the effort when they launched it. Now I wish it would just go away.

Allan Jenkins, who has also posted on this anniversary, has some other thoughts, including turning the blog into a collective effort.
