Why Sen. John Edwards is a great Gnomedex keynote speaker

I rolled my eyes yesterday when I read CBS Marketwatch’s Frank Barnako dismiss U.S. Sen. John Edwards as the keynote speaker at Gnomedex 6.

I was in Seattle for 5.0 last year, and it was an inspiring event, full of podcasters, bloggers, columnists and techies shaking hands and sharing the latest technology buzz.  This year, I’m not so sure it will be.  Politics has raised its ugly and, from the standpoint of campaigning, its irrelevant head. Instead of the “Podfather” Adam Curry and irascible and brilliant programmer Dave Winer doing keynote speeches, this year Chris has lined up former VP candidate John Edwards.

Boy, does Barnako have it wrong.

First, I don’t know about anybody else, but I’ve heard from Curry and Winer enough. I’m not dismissing their importance or value, but these guys (and others like them) have been speaking regularly at the never-ending stream of conferences (BloggerCon, VloggerCon, BlogHer, Mesh, Syndicate, and on, and on, and on) that address social media. I can’t be the only one ready to hear from some fresh voices.

And that’s what Edwards brings: a fresh voice. As I read Barnako’s diatribe, I was already convinced Edwards wouldn’t be campaigning in this talk. Instead, he’d be talking about blogging and podcasting. Not only does he “get it.” He does it. If you’ve never listened to his podcast, you should; it’s instructure. Eschwing the slick polish you might expect from someone who may well seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, Edwards sits at his kitchen table with his wife, Elizabeth. They talk with each other and their listeners about everything from foreign policy to their children’s activities to Elizabeth’s battle with cancer. They also answer questions left by listeners to their blog.

The podcast is unscripted and wholly conversational. While other presidential wannabes are plotting traditional campaign stsrategies, Edwards is building a base by building a community who would vote for him because they feel like they know him. He’s flying under the radar by participating in the conversation. I figured his keynote would talk about how he has embraced social media, along with his future plans.

It turns out I’m wrong about that. Steve Rubel is at Gnomedex and blogging the talk. According to Steve, “He’s not giving a speech. He says he’s here to learn and engage in a conversation. And boy did he.” For example (writes Steve):

What bloggers doing is important for the country, the political process…it will change democracy. Instead of leaders speaking out at people, we will engage in dialogue.

And that’s why it makes perfect sense for Edwards to open Gnomdex.

  • 1.I saw the stream and posted the video up on YouTube if anyone wants to check it out. The road map and links to the short clips are in this dailykos diary: Gnomedex 6.0 hosts Edwards w/video Don't miss part2 and part6.

I was really happy to see that it wasn't just a political speech. Something that permeated the conversation were the ideas of top down and engagement. According to Edwards, "top down kills engagement". The net can be a way to bring people into the discussion, but not if it's merely used as a delivery device for the same old political message machines.

He ends his discussion by asking the attendees to "Democratize the Democracy that we're supposedly living in." Works for me.

I'm a big Edwards supporter and blog over at his site. I'm not with OAC or anything, just an occasional blogger at dailykos and OAC. I'm not even a writer.

I love the image in this piece that Edwards is flying under the radar, because that's exactly right. I follow him through the blog and he gets no respect in the media until something like the DMR poll pops up and shows him in first place.

Keep checking the OAC main's podcast page. July is Jimmy Carter month. That's right Jimmy is going to their kitchen to podcast about his book "Our Endangered Values." You won't hear about that one anywhere but the net.

  • 2.You can have your opinion of me ofcourse, but the facts are that I have not spoken at a single conference or event since Gnomedex 5.

  • 3.Adam, my opinion of you is terrific -- honestly, not a bad thing to say. In fact, I'm a daily listener to the Charlie. I'm just glad to see people other than "the usual suspects" getting invitations to speak at these things!

  • 4.My point exactly Shel, I'm not a 'usual suspect'.

I did not attend any of the conferences you mentioned and respectfuly declined to keynote at Gnomedex6, as I have done with at least 50 invites. Honestly, I don't understand where all these speakers find the time.

  • 5.Ah, but the 50 invites means you are a usual suspect -- your name comes up on everybody's list. But more power to you for resisting!

  • 6.John Edwards was (is?) the keynote speaker at Gnomedex this year. Edwards has been podcasting since the last presidential campaign and there are two very vocal camps that have thoughts about it.As might be expected, there's the camp that feels...
