Application wiki launched

If there’s any sign that wikis are become more popular, it’s the launch of a hosted application wiki by a startup called JotSpot. The company’s Web site currently is nothing more than a couple of e-mail links, one of which allows potential users to apply for beta status on the hosted service. According to a press release, workgroups can use the hosted wiki three ways: “begin immediately using the full-featured commercial wiki, install pre-packaged wiki-applications from JotSpot’s application gallery or customize an individual wiki-application for a specific business need. “

According to an article in the San Jose Mercury News, the software “allows a company’s working group to create a Wiki for recruiting, where members can compare notes about potential candidates. Jot allows the company to expand the Wiki to form tables that order the data, or pull in information from the Web or from other Web applications.”

JotSpot isn’t the first company to aim at application-level wikis. Socialtext has raised half a million dollars from investors. JotSpot, however, says its wiki will let users create and customize Windows applications. From the article:

“In a recent demo, (Chief Executive Joe) Kraus took a couple of minutes to create a sample Wiki page for recruitment. He created a table where users can list candidates’ names and dates of their next visit, and rank them via a pull-down menu. Kraus then pretended he was a recruiter out in the field who wanted to send an e-mail update about his recruiting progress to his working group. He copied the e-mail straight to the Wiki page. These e-mails, including any attachments, can then be stored in a file on the Wiki page. You can also write a command to have the name of the candidate or a former employer searched in Google, and have the results provided in a table on the Wiki. Or via so-called SOAP protocol, you can pull specific information from a SalesForce.com account into the Wiki.”
