When you think social media, think Electrolux

When conversation turns to companies that have embraced social media, Electrolux isn’t one of the names that comes up. However, Richard Gatarski sent me a note about a post he wrote on the launch today of Electrolux’s social media newsroom.

Richard liked the Swedish kitchen appliance company’s newsroom but had a few observations about ways it could be improved. The single comment to the post (as of this writing) comes from Anders Edholm, an Electrolux representative, explaining why some things were done the way they were and acknowledging that some of Gatarski’s recommendations should be implemented.

It’s particularly gratifying to… Read More »

Even snackers eat full meals

snackersKevin Dugan tagged me on the MediaSnackers meme, a concept I’ve been digesting (pun fully intended) before juping into well-covered territory. The question: How do you respect MediaSnackers?

By way of background, Jeremiah Owyang started the meme on October 24 by presenting the video from the MediaSnackers site and offering a terse definition:

What???s a mediasnacker? Folks who consume small bits of information, data or entertainment when, where, and how they want.

I’ve now read at least 15 posts contributing to the meme, subscribed to the MediaSnackers feed, watched several related videos…basically, I’ve gorged on snacks. Here are… Read More »

Ragan’s conversation expands

I’m not sure I get Gary Goldhammer’s gripe with Ragan Communications’ adoption of social media. In his “Below the Fold” blog, Gary writes,

Social Media is Not Just About a Set of Tools ??? Will someone please tell this to Ragan and PRSA? Please, before they hurt somebody? It???s often those who profess to know the future that turn out to be the most shortsighted.

I don’t get Gary’s gripe in part because he doesn’t explain it, but that leads me to believe he figures it’s obvious, which means I just plain don’t get it. (I’m not paying much attention to PRSA, so no comment there.)

Consider that Ragan just added the ability for readers… Read More »

FIR Interview - David Carter, CTO, Awareness: 10/30/07

Forrester Research recently released a case study chronicling the implementation of blogs as an enterprise communication tool at 150-year-old financial services company Northwestern Mutual. The blogs, intended to drive a change to the organization’s culture, instead resulted in increased productivity as most of the employees starting blogs focused them on project management.

The social media platform Northwestern Mutual implemented is from

Awareness Networks (formerly iUpload), one of the companies competing in the enterprise social media space.

In this FIR Interview, Shel Holtz spoke with David Carter, Awareness’s chief technology… Read More »

Can we agree to keep The New PR conference calendar updated?

I posted a couple days ago about the lack of a comprehensive calendar of conferences, seminars, and workshops addressing new/social media, despite the fact that there are so many of these that it’s impossible to keep up. Constantin Basturea noted that there’s an “Upcoming Conferences” page in the Resources section of The New PR wiki. I honestly wasn’t aware of it—there was no link to it on the wiki’s navigation menu. I just added one, and added Blog World Expo to the list. (I have heard from at least a dozen people who are going and wondered if I’d be there, but I only just recently heard about it.)

I’d like to propose that we use this… Read More »

Allan Jenkins’ complaint has inspired me

At dinner, followed by drinks at the famous BoBi bar in Copenhagen, my long-time friend and colleagueAllan Jenkins expressed some dismay at what has become a common occurrence. He’ll get a call or email from somebody asking, “Are you going to be at the XYZ social media conference in (name city here) next week?”

“It sonds like a great conference,” Allan would reply. “I might have planned to go if I’d learned about it more than a week in advance.”

I feel Allan’s pain. There are so many conferences on social media, and I learn about many of them either after the fact or just before they’re set to begin. What would be great, we agreed, is… Read More »
