Lessig book rewrite goes online

First there was Dan Gillmor with his book, “We the Media.” Then Robert Scoble and Shel Israel took the same route with “The Red Couch” (the title of which is still in question). Now, copyright lawyer Lawrence Lessig has added his book to the list of those written online using tools that let readers collaborate in the process.

Lessig first published “Code” in 1999. It’s due for a rewrite, so the Stanford University professor has posted the book to a wiki. You can read it without registering, but registration is required to contribute.

In a SiliconValley.com article, Lessig says, “‘Code’ has become a part of cyberspace law culture,’’ Lessig said. ``And what I found most interesting is that people outside of the academic world talk about it and use it a lot. I was really trying to find a way to encourage them to contribute to the evolution of ‘Code.’” Lessig also writes about the project in his own blog.

JotSpot, a wiki provider, is donating the space for Lessig’s effort.
