Ask Jeeves posted today’s press release yesterday

Mike Manuel reports that Ask Jeeves went ahead and posted its press release yesterday announcing its acquisition of Bloglines; an FAQ was posted, as well.

Just as I thought, the press release covers the concerns expressed by people who learned of the acquisition through the rumor instead of the official announcement:

We want to assure you that the Bloglines service will continue to grow and thrive. Like other companies in the Ask Jeeves portfolio, we will operate as a standalone, separate service—the Bloglines name will remain, as will our URL, http://www.bloglines.com. We will support our current features and services, so please continue to log in to Bloglines to search, subscribe, publish and share RSS news feeds and blogs. All users will continue to be governed by the Terms of Service you agreed to when you registered for Bloglines.

Of course, by waiting for an optimum announcement date, Ask Jeeves let the rumor mill make the announcement for them, raising hackles on Bloglines users who didn’t have the benefit of the complete release. The lesson for communicators is clear: We need to counsel our companies to adopt a policy that says “the sooner the better.”
