I will not be at Podcamp Boston

One of the greatest frustrations associated with being a dedicated blogger occurs when you simply cannot blog. My “blog fodder” file is loaded with ideas and links I’d like to write about, but my exhausting travel schedule has precluded it. A look at my blog shows not much other than cross-postings from For Immediate Release. I haven’t had time to check, but my Technorati rankings must be tumbling.

And it’s not over yet. I’m on a plane back from an overnight trip to D.C., and in the morning (which will have come and gone before I get a chance to post this), I’m off to LA, then Kansas City, then Chicago. I get home Friday night, then leave early next week for Denmark. After Copenhagen, I’ll have a chance to decompress—and blog.

But I need to get a message out there just to correct some misinformation. Officially, for the record, I am not going to Podcamp Boston.

I wish I could. It looks like a great event and I wish the organizers nothing but success. But after six solid weeks on the road, I’ll have just returned from Denmark when I would have to turn around and head to Boston, and I’m simply not going to travel anywhere I don’t absolutely have to.

I was never planning to attend Podcamp Boston, but somehow my name turned up on the agenda. A number of people have asked to get together during the event, and one of the coordinators even wrote to ask if I’d confirm my attendance. I have absolutely no idea how I wound up on the agenda—I was never invited and I never recommended myself as a speaker on the Podcamp wiki. Maybe it’s Shel Israel and somebody just got it wrong. It wouldn’t the first time (or the 50th) that’s happened. At Podcast and Social Media Expo, somebody chatted with me for 10 minutes before asking how it went co-writing a book with Robert Scoble. Once again, I had to say, “That’s the other Shel.”

I certainly plan to read the live blogging posts, follow the tweets, and maybe even tune into whatever backchannel is set up. But physically I’ll be staying firmly entrenced in Concord, California, reacquainting myself with my wife, kids, dog and cat. Like Dorothy said, there’s noplace like home.

  • 1.Nope, not me either. Could there be yet another Shel?

  • 2.I'm going to guess it might be the other person listed on the session who signed you up. That would be your book co-conspirator and PodCamp NYC lead organizer John C. Havens. That's a guess, because signing up to PodCamp's sessions is through a wiki. But if there were two names listed, my guess is your co-presenter signed you up.

Sorry we won't see. I'd have loved a fun conversation on the future of audio.

  • 3.After some reflection, I think this is a brilliant move by Havens. He puts you on the ticket, helps attract scores of Shel Holtz followers to PodCamp Boston in general and to your session in particular, announces that you had to back out "at the last minute," delivers a brilliant presentation that includes some of your established thoughts, and then pimps your book.

In a way, Shel (that's Holtz, not Israel), it'll almost be like you are there.

  • 4.How about if I participate in the session via a Skype video call? Or a BlogTalk Radio session? I think John has some kind of affiliation with BlogTalk Radio. ;-)

  • 5.I dunno. That sounds kinda... technical or something. : ) Sure! That sounds like fun. Like a demo *and* a relationship.

  • 6.No objections, Shel. We'd love to have you participate in any way that you can. Maybe that's what John had in mind all along.
