Hired for blogging

We hear too often these days—certainly too often to keep reporting it every time it happens—that some poor schlemiel has been fired for blogging. It’s nice, then, to be able to report that one of those luckless bloggers has been hired due largely to the same blog that got him canned.

Joe Gordon was dismissed form his job at bookseller Waterstone’s based on less-than-complimentary posts on his blog about his employer. The folks at Forbidden Planet, a comic book chain, read the tale and headhunted Gordon, according to an article in the Edinburg Evening News. And the job they’ve offered him is considerably better than the one he lost. He’ll be handling the online side of the business as well as book and graphic novel selection. He may even start a company blog.

According to Kenny Perman, one of Forbidden Planet’s founders and directors,

“We specialize in comics and sci-fi—all the stuff that Joe seemed to be into from what I read on his blog site—and the area he worked in at Waterstone???s. I saw his blog and, while I think it???s probably ill-advised, in front of a potential audience of four billion, to refer to your employers as bastards, I couldn???t really see a problem with it…We thought it seemed daft to let a guy go who had all this specialist knowledge. We???ve got high hopes he will be a good acquisition for us. I think he deserves another chance.”
