An article in the tech trade publication ComputerWorld looks at the legal liabilities of employee blogging. The article lists a litany of problems that could arise, including libel, inappropriate disclosures, statements that could be used during litigation (a problem that isn’t new to blogs, given cases in which e-mails and posts to message boards have been used against a company), and more.

A host of myths accompany the idea of virtual teams, many of which have been dispelled by University of North Carolina Information and Technology Management Professor Arvind Malhotra. According to Malhotra, the study of 54 global virtual teams from 31 companies has found these teams “make decisions faster with more input from others and develop policies that are implemented worldwide with fewer problems than conventional teams.”
Among the findings was this nugget, dispensing with the myth that far-flung teams require hands-off leadership: “These teams require communication-intensive leaders. These team leaders check in on each of their

Steve Rubel points to a new blog from Typepad that covers Enterprise RSS, “All About RSS in the Enterprise.” Since I’ve been promoting the use of RSS internally for a couple years, I’m thrilled to see a resource dedicated to its promotion. So far, the blog includes a presentation Disney’s Mike Pusateri made at an O’Reilly conference.

The situation effort at the City of Tacoma in Washington state symbolizes what solid employee communications can accomplish. Overall, the city is facing some of its biggest challenges in years. Under these circumstances, morale and commitment among employees could naturally suffer. But thanks to the work of the communications staff, feedback from employees indicates that communication between workers and the city has never been better.
So, of course, the city has decided to eliminate employee communications. Those challenging circumstances led to a 50% budget reduction for the city’s communication department, and the supervisor elected
