Taking issue with Wikipedia

I love Wikipedia. When US Vice President Dick Cheney proclaimed the Bush administration had an agenda based on the record number of votes the president had attracted, it was the Wikipedia that let me explore the number of votes cast for every US president. Thus I was able to determine that challenger John Kerry had also exceeded the highest number of votes ever cast for a US president.

“Queen of the Sky” makes the New York Times

Ellen Simonetti has achieved a kind of fame and status in the blogosphere for bing one of the employees fired by their companies for their blogging activities. Formerly known as “The Queen of the Sky,” Simonetti was canned by Delta Air Lines for a couple suggestive photos of her in her flight attendant uniform appearing on her blog. She tells her story, along with comments from her laywer and an employment expert, in the New York Times. One cautionary quote from the labor expert: “Nonunion employees enjoy very little legal protection for their off-duty activities.”

IABC quickly communicates lawsuit settlement

The e-mail was terse and formal. Just one paragraph announcing that IABC, through its insurance carrier, has reached a settlement in the lawsuit former president Elizabeth Allan brought against the association, one of its members and that member’s company. But it was enough. Delivered to all of the 13,000 IABC members worldwide with e-mail addresses, the message signed by Chairman David Kistle, ABC, was a speedy communication.

That compares well to the initial communication about the suit, which some contend was all but invisible.  There should be no complaints from any quarter this time around.

Business Wire offers industry RSS feeds

Business Wire has launched five RSS feeds in specific industries, enabling them to claim to be the first commercial newswire to let journalists aggregate news they’re interested in using their news readers.  The industries covered: Automotive, Health, Entertainment, Sports Business, and Travel. Users have to register to take advantage of the feeds, which are found in the media community section.

Answering machine messages as brands

If you don’t think music and sound influence perceptions of a brand, just think America Online and that voice informing you “You’ve got mail.” Or how about General Electric and its ditty, “We bring good things to life”? Now think about what you hear when you call a company and hear the voice recording. How much does that recording reflect or support the brand? Most just feature an inoffensive voice reading a script.
