IM increases productivity

A survey from Siemens Business Group suggests that IM has had a marked impact on how employees do their jobs. For example, Eighty-four percent of employees working in IT make fewer phone calls thanks to IM; 76% send fewer e-mails. Nearly 80% of these employees assert that IM has improved their productivity. The same number are employed by companies that encourage the use of IM as a productivity tool.

The Siemens study focuses on the benefits IM brings to the workplace, while a META Group study looked at drawbacks, including employees’ personal use of IM. A post on InfoWorld’s blog by Tom Sullivan takes issue with META Group’s… Read More »

Yahoo’s big RSS plans

In a blog posting, Yahoo employee Jeremy Zawodny lists the skills and experience the company seeks in an RSS hacker. Besides the technical stuff, Zawodny writes, “And, of course, it’s best if you like RSS and syndication technologies. We’re bringing RSS to the masses and need your help. We have big plans for content syndication.” The post doesn’t elaborate on those plans, but if Yahoo! is serious about RSS (and an early Zawodny post was titled, “Yes, we’re serious about RSS!”), whatever they release is likely to give it a significant boost.

Student “free culture” movement spreads to 13 campuses

“We refuse to accept a future of digital feudalism where we do not actually own the products we buy, but we are merely granted limited uses of them as long as we pay the rent.”

The open-source movement was started by two Swarthmore students—who also founded the Swarthmore Coalition for the Digital Commons (SCDC)—who sued Diebold over its effort to halt posting of internal e-mails on the Web. (Diebold relented and announced it wouldn’t fight posting of e-mails pertaining to problems with its e-voting machines.) The pair was… Read More »

Facilitating rather than creating internal communication

Employee communicators spend a lot of time producing communication materials they distribute to employees. You have to wonder how much this traditional top-down communication model will engage employees. It’s an important consideration, seeing as how senior executives have made it clear through a number of channels that they believe an engaged workforce is a requirement if they’re going to compete in the emerging economy.

If you’re looking for an example of engagement, it may be something of a surprise to find it at a trucking company. But at Roadway Express Inc., an effort to turn loading dock workers into leaders paid off in a big… Read More »

Government and RSS

Several PR bloggers have noted that the State Department has begun distributing RSS feeds. Wired News has an overview of government use of RSS that includes a comment by RSS developer and evangelist Dave Winer, who believes these agencies are early adopters. “I’d be surprised if more than 2 percent of internet users are also RSS users,” Winer says.
