A craving for podcast erotica
Frank Barnako reports that a new analysis, “The Podcast Value Chain Analysis” (PDF file), concludes that the most popular podcasting content is erotica. I’ll be getting my hands on this report one way or another. So far, Podcast Alley is the only means of which I’m aware that assesses podcast popularity, and this week’s top 10 don’t include any erotica (unless you include Dawn & Drew’s frank talk erotica, which I don’t). The top-rated show is “This Week in Tech,” followed by “The Mac Cast.” “Catholic Insider” is on the list, as is “Coverville” (which plays cover versions of well-known songs).
Still, Alex Nesbitt, author of the report and president of Bella Ventures, Inc., says of podcast erotica, “The supply is not yet meeting market demands.”
The market can demand it. Neville and I will not supply it.
Nesbitt also expects the market for podcasting tools and services will reach $400 million “in the near future,” and that podcasts with enduring content can become valuable as archived audio. He also anticipates the growth of advertising in podcasting.
I’ll be back with more after I’ve read the whole report.
UPDATE: From reading the report, it seems Nesbitt bases his assessment upon access to podcasts listed in the podcast directory that he maintains. I have made a significant effort to list “For Immediate Release” in as many places as I can, and I’d never heard of Nesbitt’s directory. It is, however, listed in Robin Good’s recently published comprehensive list of podcast directories. Still, I wouldn’t use that directory as an authoritative indication of what people are looking for. On Podcast Alley, I found four erotica-based podcasts (supporting Nesbitt’s contention that there aren’t enough to meet market demand). One was ranked 91, another was ranked 272, and the other two were unranked and had zero votes. I still think the greatest demand will be for music podcasts, which I’ll discuss in an upcoming post.
